Not necessarily. Running the fan on high puts the air in contact with the coil for a shorter time, and it doesn't get chilled as well. High is good for getting some relief farther out in the room...

I have a 2008 DSP bought new. No mods except DIY nylon bolt stop. It doesn't have a thousand rounds so far. Shoots fine and looks like new; I'm just not into rifles like I am handguns.

Going down the barrel, the lead bullet will wear away a lot more than the steel, but the steel wears, too. Especially the high spots.
