Thank you both. In the free state, the screws are only about 1/8" longer than the thickness of the rubber. Sounds like I'll have to compress it quite a bit. But if it works, so be it.

Is mounting rings on bases really more solid (secure) than using rings on the receiver dovetail? If the answer is yes, that's the only reason I would buy bases or a rail. But I'm not sure it is.
