Nice

Very cool. In some cases, the original box, especially with original paperwork, is worth almost as much as the gun. Great find!

VQ mount

The theory for the VQ barrel mount, as I see it, is to make sure barrel droop is eliminated from the game. The scope will be looking where the barrel is pointed regardless of barrel/receiver droop. ...

Hornets

I'e never had either of the Hornets mentioned here but will share the experience os a good friend who has shot a .22 Hornet for years. He is a very detail oriented guy and reloads every center fire...

Exactly. If/when that extractor comes loose, it is captured between the bolt and the receiver. The result was often breaking the thin section of the bolt below the extractor groove.

Yup

Put 50 rds of 33 gr VMax through one of mine today. The inner extractor was removed years ago and the groove has not been filled. The gun shoots both WMR and HMR with just a barrel change and has...

Sorry

Sorry I can't help you with that. One of the first pieces of advice I got here was remove the 2nd extractor from your magnum. I didn't have 10 rds through my first one at that time. I've been here...

Few

I wouldn't expect many replies from people using both "extractors". Removing the inner one has been a common practice for many years.

FTE

gcrank1, you beat me to the question about what is "FTE". Extraction and ejection are two very different things accomplished by different parts. I'm going way back in time here, to point out that...

Last night

I was expecting a lower scoring game with Cole and Scherzer pitching. Now, who knows?

Very cool that you and your grandson got to share that experience.

Me too

All of mine have a magnum charging handle. Used to be able to get them from EABCO but no more. They do have a "skeletized" charging handle that looks pretty good but I don't know the dimensions. ...

The heavy bolt handle

I have no experience to back this up. Just sharing an opinion posted long ago by a former member who had a good reputation. . He didn't like the heavy bolt handles that came with .17 HM2 barrels...

Got one, sorta'

I kinda' have a 96/17. Much like I have some 10/17s. It started life as a 96/22M. I bought it at a local gun shop several years ago for about $400. Soon as I got home with it I ordered a Shilen...

Barrel droop

I like the barrel droop theory. Lots of guys get hung up on the idea that the barrel has to be free floated like many other rifles. Not so with a 10/22. Look at the method Ruger uses for attaching...

Yup

I had one of the Anschutz 17P pistols and it was a hoot to shoot. It thought it was a rifle. I sold it because I had other HMRs and just didn't need it. Also had a Ruger single six in HMR which...

Glad to hear there's a factory HMR semi-auto running well. Seems like I heard there were some issues early on. I'm not surprised Savage figured the problems Ruger couldn't but I'm willing to bet...

10/17

It would've been cool to shoot a prototype. I wonder how many there were and how one would have ultimately gotten into private hands. Now that I think of it, the barrel from a 96/17 could fit a...

Rare

Rare as hen's teeth, I'd say. I believe one of the original "Maggits", who posted as Chief Dave, did some consulting with Ruger reference the WMR and HMR versions. I think he had a prototype 10/17....

And then...........

And then there's the ever-present variable known as "the shooter". You can get better equipment but you can never totally eliminate that guy. Good days and bad days. Keep after it! :bthumb:

Buffers

Long ago but not so far away in the land of Rimfire Central, 10/22s were often referred to as "click-clacks". Then along came the buffer to replace the steel pin!
