Its your rifle and you can do as you please, but for me a scope looks out of place on a Model 39A. I would get a good peep sight for it and go from there.

I don't know what kind of experience you have with refinishing wood, but you do not want to sand the finish off but use a stripper. Sanding will remove wood and you cannot put it back.
