I've got the same thing marked CD on bbl for April '57. Dad bought it about summer of 58 iirc. Works like a champ. Great guns. You will enjoy it.

The "well worn barrel rifling" may be lead build up. Try cleaning it really well and you might be surprised at how sharp the rifling is. Happened to me with a ruger 22 that was keyholing at 25yds...

Like you I'm having old eye issues and after putting a scope on I don't like the mass it adds to the package. I'm considering a vortex venom as it mount low on the receiver.

I also have a '72 std and just use the 9 rd mags, Never felt the need for more capacity. Just out of curiosity with the cold weather did you degrease and use nothing or a dry lube before shooting.
