I assume this means how flush the bolt face and breech meet. Is there an easy way to check this on an assembled rifle? I can picture doing this on my Remington 597 with the barreled action removed...

Yes, especially if you're using splatter targets. More expensive, but if you're only going to use them occasionally, they will make it easier to see the holes.

You're not trying to load them from the top through the lips, are you? Once you pull the thumb knob down, the rim goes in the notch, and you push the round backwards from the front.

I've used the "tactical" cheek pad from Blackhawk with success. Be sure that you can remove the bolt if you attach something intended to be permanent.

Round count doesn't matter to me, at least 9 versus 10. The first shot after changing magazines going off target does. If inserting magazines with the bolt closed solves the problem, then so be it.
