Check out the chamber to see if there is any sign of a firing pin ding that may have displaced any metal into the chamber. If the gun was dry fired, the firing pin can and will produce a bit of metal...

That sounds like you have the problem figured out. Maybe a new cartridge stop, guide and even a new spring? The cartridge stop may be the issue. All the parts are cheap at Brownells.

You said its all there but it sounds as though the guide spring is not catching the cartridge. That spring is supposed to stop the cartridge to be picked up by the bolt. Look at some Youtube videos...

Don't use CARB CLEANER. It will melt the wood finish. Using BRAKE cleaner is much easier on the gun and generally won't harm wood finishes. Buy the non-chlorinated brake cleaner at WM. Works great...
