Local sources for stock wood?

I am curious how many members buy wood locally and do the entire job from scratch..... this ad just popped up in my local Craigslist.

“1.5" thick 8' legnths random width from 5-8" and super figured boards. This is the best most crazy grain out of over 2000bf (literally 2 units). I will also have about 500 more bf available at this thickness by end of the week. Not all figured and less money per bf. Also have 1" and 2" available“

Does this happen where you live?

It happens if you live near the source of the wood but you have to remember... You don't just buy a fresh cut slab, take it home and carve a stock out of it.

I'm not an expert, but I believe that 1.5" may be too narrow for a stock. I think most stock makers want at least 2" and maybe even 2-1/2" at a minimum. When I had a place in NE PA we had a lot of black walnut trees that were sold and used for furniture and other stuff. You had to be sure the wood had been properly seasoned.

For the amount of time and effort it takes to make a stock from scratch... there isn't a snowball's chance I'm risking the wood itself. There's a lot more to it than just being figured and pretty.

That said there's a whole lot you could still do with those boards. I have a wonderful lumberyard in my neighborhood that I enjoy visiting but not for gunstock wood.
