Won this auction

Well, either I got a great deal or I really screwed up...

Found out this morning I won this auction on a S&W pistol I was pretty sure was a K22 but the description didn't mention a model number. I'll know for sure once I receive it but wondering what the brain trust thinks ...

Here is the best pic of the pistol. Patridge front sight, adjustable rear, looks like a K frame? Is this a K22/ Model 17 or something else?

It's either a K22 or pre-1968 Model 17. Very little difference.Would need the serial number to confirm.If it's pre 1958, it's a K22.

Perfect- just as I thought. I got it for what I thought was a fair price given the condition I could barely determine from the pics.

Thanks, Bob

It looks like it has the tapered barrel and rib of a K-22 Outdoorsman. It also looks like it has a target hammer and a standard trigger with some sort of trigger shoe

Model 17-3 "3 T"(top) and 3rd Model K-22 Outdoorsman with target hammer and standard trigger (bottom)

Very nice examples. I've been looking for one of these for quite some time. Hopefully I'll hear from the auction house tomorrow regarding the shipping details and get it on its way to me.

That sure looks like a nice old original gun, with holster. I bought a similar set up some years ago, my favorite revolver:)

This one is the 4" version with ramp front sight-1958 model 18, I have large hands, so I use large after market grips. My hobby wood shop walnut box!

I would estimate a late '40s early '50s K-22. It has the low luster blue, standard "hump back" hammer used at that time (not a target hammer), the screw in the front of the trigger guard (and probably the top side plate screw if we saw the other side).

BTW, if you have the serial number that would tell us immediately what you have. If the number on the tag in the picture 74854 is the serial number without the K prefix, that would indicate a 1949 manufacture date, which fits in with the look and features of the gun.

I've owned several from this time frame, here's one from 1951.

So what's a fair price Bob? It looks just like mine. I bought mine 20 years ago for $150.00.

BobSc 05-19-2019 11:34 PM

Well, they certainly aren't that price any more.... :)

My winning bid was $450. By time I pay the shipping, transfer fee, etc.. I'll probably have around $550 in it. Around here they go for around $700 at the shows and a bit more at the LGS...

Also missed out on a 1406 Anschutz 164. Bid $400 and it ended up going for $930+... glad I didn't win that auction...

Your bottom revolver is not an Outdoorsman. It is a standard K22 Masterpiece.
Pictured here is a K22 Outdoorsman from 1938. Big Larry

Well, received the K22 this morning and it is pretty much as advertised. Bluing is in very good shape, no rust anywhere. A fairly significant turn line but only in the blue, no metal damage. Bore and cylinders look to be in very good to excellent shape. Not sure who made the trigger shoe, but it looks an awful lot like an Ace...
Serial number is the one stated above- K74854, so I'm assuming late 40's, early 50's...

Need to get some target grips. The original grips are okay, but my big hands just can't get a decent grip on them. I'll be keeping my eyes out for a set of grips at the gun shows here. They seem to come up on a fairly regular basis if you know what you're looking for. Looking forward to taking it out to shoot soon...

Per Mr. Jinks', History of Smith and Wesson, K74854 is 1949.

Unless you get lucky target K frame diamond target grips are going for $200 these days. I thought N frame grips were over priced and K 's are now joining them. Best of luck in your search!
