New camera - Nikon Coolpix P1000

NOTE: I have no vested interest in Nikon cameras other than being a fan. There are large zoom "bridge" cameras available from Sony, Canon, etc. that merit due consideration too.

I bought the new Nikon Coolpix P1000 about 10 days ago. It's Nikon's latest "bridge" camera - between simple point-and-shoot and full DSLR. The P1000 has an insane optical zoom of 125X. Prior to this, I've been using a Nikon Coolpix B700 with 60X optical zoom. It's much smaller, lighter and much less expensive than the P1000 with much of the same feature set as the P1000 but with half the zoom capability. Since I find myself shooting a lot of wildfife and landscape pictures, zoom is important to me. OTOH, I was concerned about the size and weight difference between the cameras.

I put my initial impressions of the camera on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-r...SIN=B07F5HPXK4) but here's my conclusion. Despite my concerns about the P1000's weight and size, I've found that carrying it, framing shots quickly and shooting without a monopod/tripod produces excellent unedited image quality, at least to this amateur's eyes.

Nikon P1000

That's a nice camera from everything I have read. We have not yet seen them locally so have not put my hands on one. I have similar requirements to yours and currently use a pair of Nikon 7100 DSLR's. One has a Nikon 300mm (2.8 lens) which is great for wildlife shots but heavy. I usually have a Nikon 28-300 on the other which allows the telephoto adjustments needed as a walk around lens. Might consider trading all that heavy stuff in for a P1000 but like the speed I get with that 300mm as I can shoot without using a tripod or monopod if needed.

Nice acquisition :t

I've not shopped cameras for a while and was amazed to see these reviewed recently.
I'm still using my 5-year-old 24x.

The zoom on those things is amazing. I get the impression that the P1000 could show you hits on steel at 1000yds from the shooting bench?

Edit: I wonder at what distance that camera could show .22 caliber holes in targets?

A friend who is a photo journalist (uses a Fuji X-T3 these days with various lenses) asked me if I would take a sequence of shots of a distant object to see what the image quality looked like over the the full zoom range (35mm equivalent range: 24mm to 3000mm). For grins, I figured I'd add them to this thread.

Shots were taken using a tripod with the camera in P Mode and shooting JPG+RAW in FINE Resolution. All pictures are unedited jpegs straight off the SD card. The first one has an arrow appended to show the "target" object.

For the Nikon Coolpix P1000:
35mm Equivalent of 24mm is NO ZOOM
33mm Equivalent of 3000mm is MAXIMUM ZOOM

while i may ponder getting something like that, i find that for the moment a PnS or more compact version is best for my travels.

I picked up a Lumix DMC-ZS100 to replace my 4+ y/o sony more compact camera. I only got the Lumx for the longer 380? zoom and the time lapse more for the time-lapse. From the reviews the zoom at the 380mm point has soft edges and i can see that, but most of my shots are done at the wide/medium. The time lapse is more fun tho.

i want to get one of those 3/2 ? cameras with the swappable lenses, but for now, its what i have.

Your Lumix is a great camera and one I also considered as a travel camera. I chose the Nikon A1000 instead because of the 35X zoom. What I gave up with that choice, however, was the 1" sensor in the Lumix and its ability to handle low light images more easily than the A1000's 1/2.3" sensor.

Here are a couple of pix from the A1000 and an updated "family portrait" with its larger siblings, the P1000 and B700.
