I have been reading all the posts of people and shooting at 200 yards and farther. I have been very interested in seeing how far one can shoot a 22LR and what group size can be achived. So today was such a beautiful day. minimum wind, mostly just a light breeze every now and then. A true rarity here in central MT. I got my 40X sporter I made out and dug out some ammo. Made up some targets with aiming points on them and went to work having fun. I will post a pic with comments in separate postings. I'd be interested in seeing what you guys think. My 40X sporter was made from a HB 40X and put in a short action ADL stock. A Leupold 3X9 EFR scope. It has been giving me great groups for 20 years. All groups were 50 shots at 200 yards. The approx group size is written in pencil on the targets. A little hard to see. I didn't use any high end ammo as I was just shooting sporting ammo today.

Target #1 I shot Winchester Power Points. The old stuff from Australia. I have shot some really good 100 yard groups with this stuff. In the 1/2" or less when the wind isn't giving me fits. I was very pleased with the results of this ammo at 200 yards. The one hole off to the left is the result of a Remington Yellow Jacket. I shot 20 rounds of that ammo and that far left hole is the only one that hit the target at 200 yards.

The Federal Gold medal HV match ammo has been a good shooter in my gun so I gave it a 200 yard try. It did real well too.

One of my go to rounds for more than 50 years for me has been CCI Mini Mag Hollow Points. They gave a bigger group and about what I have expected. I shot while the breeze was blowing and that enlarged my group.

The newest Winchester Power Points are good for what they are. But they can't hold a candle to the old Power points.

The surprise of the shooting today was the newest Winchester Super Speed 37 gr. HP ammo. It shot very well.

Those older Power Points are way above the quality of current Winchester production.

Well done JP. :t

Thoroughly enjoyed this post. Great Job. Now feel challenged to try my 52D at 200 yards.

Great write up. Thanks for sharing. Nice groups at 200. It's amazing how far people are starting to shoot their .22s now. You proved it can be done.

Excellent work with a mid magnification scope. No need for the Hubbell even at 200 yards.

The 3x9 is at its limits at 200 yards. I'm sure the groups could be tightened up if I had put my 6.5 X 20 leupold on my 40X, but this was a comparison shoot.

Jp-- Very nice shooting with those old PPt's. Thanks for posting the results. It's too bad you didn't chrono them, THAT data would have been very interesting as well, I bet. At any rate, that 200 yd group you shot with the old PP ammo looks to rival some of the best groups that RFC'er jaia obtained, many of them shot using "premium" (read:expensive) ammo (THANKS jaia!). So those PPt's must have been an extremely good lot (only 3.5" vertical dispersion?). One just never knows what suprises lay in store when shooting this rimfire stuff:D

I have some older "black box" Winchester Supreme ammo on hand that, like those old PPt's, was also loaded in Australia. Perhaps I may give it a go at 200 and see what it does just for fun. Maybe those Australians were onto something;)

I've done a fair bit of patterning over the years, and no duck can fly through even the worst ones. :bthumb:

jaia asked for a referance scale so I have reposted all the pics with a ruler in the pic. I hope this helps.

I thought of using my chrony but I just wanted to do some shooting. Nice calm days don't happen that often here. I can chronograph any time.

I have had very good results from the first gen. Power Points. My only regret is I didn't buy more of them.
