$399 for 44US(b): Nice price or crack pipe?
My local shop has a Mossberg 44US (b) with S100 peep, post/ring front sight with hood, the skinny and long Mossberg scope and mount (looks original to the gun), sling with swivels, and a magazine. The gun looks pretty nice, rust-free, buttplate looks great, possibly refinished (nicely) stock. Missing the green safety plug. They're asking $399.

I'm looking for a "trainer" right now, something cheaper and softer shooting than my Garand. I'm thinking either this or a 10/22. The problem is to get a 10/22 where I want it with peeps, longer barrel, etc., I'll end up putting in a lot (like almost as much as the Mossberg). I also like older guns and keep striking out on older 10/22 for sale around here. However, the magazines are much, much cheaper. I'd like a GI 44US or Remington 513, but have been unlucky in my search. I found a MAS 45, but the seller wanted over $600 for it.

I guess I'm asking two questions: a) is it a good price, and b) would it be a good fit for me?

The price is probably about right considering it has the Mossberg scope & mount. Without scope they normally top out at about $300.
I'd still try to get them down a little tho! They said asking $399;)

Personally I'd rather have an old Mossberg than a 10/22. However I do own several 77/22s!:)

Although I've sold my 44US to a friend, I also have a 10/22, a 77/22 and a Mossberg 42MC. The 42 is similar to the 44 (one of the big reasons I sold it), and is my multi purpose go-to piece. Since it has already been drilled/tapped and stock redone, I don't feel too bad about wear issues at all. I think I sold my 44 with peeps and one magazine for $325.

For what it's worth, my 10/22, even with cool mods, is my least favorite fun gun of the bunch. When shooting, the bolt gun is a big advantage over the autoloader as it does not jump from the cycling and I can see the steel silhouettes fall or paper get punched much easier. Might seem silly, but was one observation that I had.

400.00 sounds a lot for a gun that sold for around 200.00 not too long ago before everyone rediscovered old Mossbergs. But it's complete so lets see what you have. S100-75.00 bucks or more. Pair of detachable swivels-50.00 bucks. Magazine-45.00. I don't know exactly what scope and mount. But together at least 75.00. So by my guess you have 245.00 of parts that are usually missing. So the gun is 155.00 of that 400.00. Best thing it's complete. I'd do the 350.00 cash and shuffle your feet. Cash and shuffling has done well for me. Good luck and post some pics when u get it.;)

I recently passed on a really nice 44US (too nice actually, it had a lot of re-finish work); shop was firm on $450. I held my fire and found another one (1944 contract order date is seems) for $250 in nice/original shape. Scooter and Rosscoe once again have sage advice. And Scooter is right, the old Mossys are going up in price in my area. Perhaps my interest is detectable by sellers. Pic of my 44US attached to give you an idea of what $250 buys in this part of the Old Dominion.

And to the OP, I could care less about an old Mossy scope being on the rifle in question! Just my 2 cents........!

I have to agree with Ross. The old original scope looks good, but I probably would replace it with a Weaver V-22 or a good 3x9

The Civilian models are usually overpriced as most sellers think they are all military trainers because it says US on it. But they do not bring the money the trainers do.

As the others mentioned, the price is to high even with the scope. But it all depends on how bad you want it, I myself would walk away and wait for a better deal to come along. All the 44's are great shooters, both trainer and civilian models.

When you get the itch it is hard to walk away sometimes.

OP could make an OTD offer.:t Be nice if he showed up again?
