Federal 50gr WMR Velocity?

I just ordered some of these. I think the advertised velocity is 1,530 fps. Have any of you guys shot them over a chrono?

Yep

Thanks jaia, that is quite an extreme spread in velocity.

That ES is normal for CCI made magnum rimfire.
It's hunting ammunition, not match quality.
I've tried/chronographed all the available brands and types of 22wmr.
Results are in the 50 at 200 thread in the RFC Long Range forum.

It shoots with match grade accuracy in one of my guns. I have always wondered why nobody makes match grade 22 magnum ammo. It's truly a %%%% shame.

I'd like to see some of y'er targets DR.
None of the 22wmr I've tested has been made with a level of quality control
necessary to produce tight mv's or consistent trajectories.
Yes, sometimes I get a run of decent cartridges that do well,
but that's an abberation, not the norm. Visual inspection showed
bullet defects, canted seating and irregular brass dimensions.
Chronograph numbers show ES in excess of 100 fps.
Its hunting ammo, center of critter out to 75 yards.

Oh, wow, deja vu all over again. ;)

My experience with .22 magnum ammo...

My experience with .22 magnum ammunition has been one of disappointment. I did try over some years to get a rifle/ammo combination that would give me the ability to take squirrel sized animals out to 100 yards if I had a mind to do so. Shooting off of a bench, which would be unrealistic in the woods, I never got small enough groups to be ethical. And my offhand shooting accuracy has deteriorated as I have grown older. So I still shoot paper, but if I were to be honest, I would have to stay within 50 yards and be comfortably sitting to ethically hunt little critters. And at that range, in truth, a standard velocity .22 long rifle will do, and be a bit more accurate to boot. I will make one other plug for safety, which I have made before in the squirrel threads. It is too easy to have a .22 bullet fired up into the air at a squirrel in a tree to have that bullet come down to earth someplace. If it hits a person, it can be fatal. Boy do the squirrel hunters get upset with me on this. But it is true, I had a friend back in the fifties who shot, his bullet cleared a large hill, coming down in Chester, Vermont and creased a lady's belly. Some places you are required to use shotgun, which is way safer. But past traditions are attractive. As you read this, if you are such a hunter, please try and have the squirrel have a tree trunk behind him.

they used to be 1650 or 1750fps, but 5 years ago they dropped it to 1530. Makes zero sense. They keep jacking up the 17hmr with new powders and the 50 grain becomes a dynapoint!

Coyotehunter223 12-13-2019 09:46 AM

Agreed. I didn't have a chrono back then, I wonder if they really were 1650 fps though?

This is a 9 shot group @ 50 yrds from my RAR not match but but good enough to hit a coyote at 100 yrds.
