Been wrestling with the buy new vs older quandary. Each scenario has potential pitfalls. A lot of info used for the decision, I found here. Much appreciated to all.

Decided the fit / finish, milled in rear sight and resale value of a nice older model appealed more to me then the newer 41’s.

Here’s a listing picture. I love these grips.

Thanks guys. If I interpreted the S/N sticky correctly, it’s a 1991 model. A GB consignment auction with a penny starting price. Thought it would go for higher as the average GB selling price was $886.00 for the last 9 used 41’s.

It will be interesting to see what the chamber and breach face look like. I’ve a couple rifles that like SK Pistol Match so that’s Plan A for ammo.

I will report back to the good folks here at RFC when I get to know it a little better. Thanks again.

The Model 41 came in today. Its nicer then I was expecting. Cosmetically, not one scratch. Bluing is basically perfect. Nicer then the pics. The box is in very nice shape but not original to the gun and the disassembly manual is missing. The tools did include the small Allen wrench.

Mechanically, all the pins look untouched, the mag releases with just a touch, the safety snicks on and off easily, no dents in the grips. The face of the chamber and breach shows no signs of damage. Seeing lots of blue on potential wear surfaces but not savvy enough to know what’s good and bad. The slide feels very smooth. It’s obviously been shot, just don’t know how much.

Cleaned it and tried the plop test with SK Pistol Match. Nice plop sound when going in. Won’t fall out by itself. Requires just a touch, then it falls free.

Yet to be shot but I think I got real lucky and I can see why there are a lot of 41 fans. 😀

I think you did very well. If given the opportunity I would always opt for old vs new, but old wasn't readily available when I bought my new one.:)

When you posted the original picture and said it was made in 1991 I noticed right off the box was not original to pistol. Still you did well.Looks really nice and i like the grips.

I was also looking for old v/s new but could not find a used one at the time ! So I ended up buying two new ones one pc and other standard ! The standard had a slide stop break and safety lever problem but that was minor fixes with help from people on this site they both are reliable with s v Ammo I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another new again!

Thanks Webfoot and Wproct. Turtle1903, I admire your buying strategy! Good to read you have those new ones running well. We should be thankful the 41 hasn’t gone the way of the Woodsman.

I’m tinkering with the new toy. Replacing the recoil spring which has a slight bend in it (not straight lengthwise) and probably 28 years old. It’s a S&W spring, finished on both ends.

Looked at Wolff but I’d like to run a factory 7.5 lb spring. After several trials and tribulations with the Ebay payment system, I ended up calling S&W.

I explained I was a happy owner of a Model 41 and wanted to purchase a recoil spring. Preferably two, with one for a spare.

S&W customer service said don’t worry about payment and sending two new springs, free of charge which really made my day. 😀

And if I come across an older 41 it will follow me home

I actually kind of miss spoke a little bit when I declared that my model 41 was purchased new. It was used and it had been made in 2007, so it was newer vintage but not new and un-fired. I bought it from a local dealer who will allow you to return a used gun purchase within a couple days if you are not satisfied, so my risk factor was minimal. I had previously owned a couple of older model 41's and this newer vintage model 41 shoots just as well as the older ones did.
