Both look nice, but I think I like the Recruit better.

On the Sobol, I think that the matte finish on the metal probably looks better with the likewise matte oil finish on the wood. The whole rifle, action and furniture looks modern and as such the matte finish fits right in, ties everything together well. If it were a more classic-looking rifle along the lines of a Mauser, BRNO, Anschutz, etc., I agree that the bluing would look good. Besides, the finish you have on there probably does a much better job of protecting the metal than bluing.

Congratulations on both rifles!

Working OverTime

Sorry for being absent.

But, for the last nine days I been working overtime.
At least fourteen hours per day with only twenty-four hours OFF.

It has not been easy.

Moreover, my computer has been down
because I purchased my wife a new computer
with some overtime money.

When my wife ordered the computer
she did not allow me time to review the order form.

She got cheap and decided to delete the in-home set-up
and information transfer service I had specified.

As such, when the computer arrived
and she tried to transfer the data
from the old computer ... it did not work.

She was stuck.
And, so was I by default.

Anyway, I'm still working overtime.
So I will continue to be AWOL.

I should be asleep by now.
But, I can't resist our forum.

Until I get sometime off ... later guys.

Man, I was on vacation at El Paso this past Christmas holiday and drove through Fort Stockton -- nice country out there. :bthumb: Saw a lot of dead deer on roadside - man, all that wasted meat. :(

Drove some 250 miles from Odessa to Del Rio area one time in the early 80's counted over 40 dead deer on the road. Hit a big buck one time near El Dorado Tx after an unsuccessfull week of hunting on a lease there. Dang thing jumped from the bar ditch over the right lane to jump in front of the truck which was in the left lane were I had moved and started to slow to avoid them!! Nearly totalled a 3 week old Toyota Hilux P/U. There are some deer in that part of the world!!

Hit and Try to Run Deer ... near Fort Stockton

Last year while driving to work very early in the morning - approximately 0500h.

I ran into a doe on the frontage road of I-10
near the city limit of southeast Fort Stockton.

More like the doe ran in-front of my Jeep while traveling about 55 mph.
Needless to say, Bambi's mom didn't make it.

As for the waste of meat ... the vultures, buzzard and coyotes
were, in short order, recycling the deer.

Within three days of her demise,
the deer was nothing but a pile of bone and hair.

As for my Jeep, I had an estimate for $1600 in bodywork.

I hated the fact that the deer died needlessly.
Had I been driving slower, the whole thing could have been avoided.

Such is life in Pecos County.

For what its worth ... every year there are several
Open Road Races sponsored by Pecos county held in Fort Stockton.

During one race last year, one of the faster cars
struck a vulture that had been feeding on road kill.

The vehicle had the leading edge of the roof damaged,
the front windshield was broken and caved-in.

I'm not sure if this DNF was one for the record books.

For the vulture, his DNF was forever.

Well, my old computer is up and running - sort of.

Some of my files were not backed-up before my wife began
to transfer data from the old computer to the new one.

The data transfer program that my wife bought from DELL
did not work as advertized.

Moreover, I lost all of my email files.
Over two and one-half years of email ... gone.
Maybe Norton Utilities might be able to help.

Anyway, I'm back on-line.
At least until I go back to work.

I'm on my scheduled break of the work cycle.
I volunteered to work over-time during my break.

However, during the state wide TDCJ shake-down, so far no over-time
has been authorized for participation in the shake-down.

At least not at my unit - N5 (Transfer Faciltity), Fort Stockton, Texas.

As such, I was able to take a few days-off.

I have a little catching-up to do at our forum.

Oh yea ... my 2nd Legion Sobol should be in-route
to my Texas FFL holder in Odessa.

Just got back from an impromptu trip to Odessa
for my wife to go to Walmart.

And, for me to pick-up my 2nd Legion Sobol.

When I opened the battered Izhmash shipping box,
I wasn't disappointed.

The stock on this carbine is a slightly lighter shade
with some shadowy tiger strip watermarks throughout the wood.

Very attractive - indeed.

This afternoon when I returned from Odessa
the sun was going down and growing dimmer.

Not good light for taking pictures.

I will be taking photos of the stock tomorow.
When the sunlight is strong, bright and clear.
And, will post them as soon as possible.

Bye the way, I noticed that a Russian warehouse label
remained attached to the shipping box.

The nomenclature of this Legion carbine is Sobol KO-10.

On Medical Leave ... Cleared to Go Back to Work

Bad Night ... Off to the Doctors Office

In a half-hour, I'm headed to the Doctor.

Some of you may have noticed I've been participating
in our forum on a fairly regular basis.

I've been on Medical Leave during for my entire last work cycle.

Seems that a strong and persistent pain behind my knee
could have been caused by a blood clot - deep venous thrombosis (DVT).

A scan was ordered by my primary care physician.
Actually, it was a physicians assistant.

Anyway, the doctor that performed the ultra sound scan
did not find a clot or evidence of a prior clot.

At least not in my right leg.

What a relief. But, more uncertainty has been generated.

So, what is or was my problem? For the time being ... unknown.
Without further testing and examination.

I'm scheduled for a complete physical in the near future.

As it stands, I've been cleared to go back to work.

Still waiting for the sun to rise higher in the sky.
For some photos of my "new" Sobol.

Notice the amount of tiger-stripe watermarks in the wood.
The color of this is stock is also significantly lighter than my first Sobol.

Back to Work

Tonight at 2145 will be my first day back to work
since my leg problem.

I'm going to try to work some more overtime - if it is available.

I was glad to be away from work since the implementation of
Correctional Officer pat searches and metal detector sweeps.

This process is similar to the TSA aircraft boarding searchs.
Also, to include the luggage screening.

Anything and everything (food, drinks, flashlight, pens, note pad,
handcuff case, mace holder, belt, name tag (metal), hat, eye glass holder,
no coffee cups allowed, no canned drinks or food allowed & etc.)
we carry-in are subject to thorough search.

Did I mention removing our shoes.

I don't mind the screening.

What I mind is the suspicion cast upon all COs
because of a few bad apples.

In any organization there will always be
less than scrupulous individuals present.

The CO pat downs and metal detector sweeps will impede
the entry of contraband into the prison system.

But, it will not stop it.

Good officers will continue to perform their duties.

And, the corrupt officers will find a way to continue their illicit activities
(tobacco smuggling, cell phone smuggling, note smuggling & etc.).

Eventually, the illegal actions of corrupt officers will be uncovered.

There are no secrets in prison.

Whenever it serves their purpose ... sooner or later,
a prisoner will reveal (snitch) whatever is or was taking place.

A bad officer will be, eventually, found-out.
