small crack in receiver Win 52B

I have been trying to shoot good groups consistently with my Win 52B (made in 1937). Occasionally I get below half an inch at 50 yards; sometimes I get 80 percent groups, and sometimes I get closer to an inch. I gave been working thru various problems: fuzzy sight picture, mushy Protektor rear bag, best stool height, bench technique (free recoil versus moderate grip), chamber fouling after 25 rounds that creates resistance to chambering.
I thought I might setback the barrel about an inch. When I removed the barrel today, I was surprised to see a crack in the receiver between the receiver ring and the front guard screw hole, which are about 3/8" apart.

Is that crack a likely contributor to my loose groups? I can repair the crack (weld, anneal, and tap) and/or move the front guard screw to the rear half an inch. Do you have any suggestions
Thanks

I can see welding the receiver, but, I would hate to see you anneal the receiver,,

Annealed, the receiver would have zero wear resistance, and would readily gall,,

Leave it as welded,, this is not an excavator tooth,,,

I've seen this gentleman's work up close. A local well known gunsmith uses him often and it's just amazing what he can do.

I can get it welded here. I would anneal just the weld. Thanks.

You might want to wait and see if Seewin responds to your question. He is one of the most knowledgeable individuals around here on Model 52's.

I might should find a specialty welder. My local welder wants to use mild steel filler.
Also, I would consider using a 22 barrel liner versus setting the barrel back 3/4 to 1 inch.
