Here's some info I was able to scrape up on the Martinis.

The date codes are on my FTP site and are able to be downloaded or printed right from the site. I obtained them from a friend in England.

BSA Dates

Jay,

I put this together some time ago, hopefully this is close to what you may be looking for. I believe it to be accurate. BJM

Prominent General Characteristics of BSA .22 LR
BSA Internationals are stamped INTERNATIONAL on the receiver side that contains the take-down screw. Most are stamped with a MK number. The differences in MK numbers (model) can be noted below. This should help distinguish the model if unmarked. The MK number simply noted a change in design in Action,Barrel or stocking.

BSA International MK- II 1953 - 1959
Receiver 1-1/8 wide
Barrel threads into receiver
Forearm screwed to bottom of barrel with single screw

BSA International MK III 1959 - 1967
Receiver 1-1/16 wide
Barrel clamped in receiver with two cross bolts (No longer threaded)
Forearm hanger of aluminum clamped in receiver below barrel allowing free floating barrel.
This feature requires receiver to be exceptionally long and heavy
Forearm hanger has rail cut into bottom
Wood forearm sides screwed to hanger with 3 screws per side.

BSA International MK IV (ISU model) Intro 1968 - 1985
Barrel ISU only. .850 Dia.
Barrel clamped in receiver with two cross bolts
Barrel no scope blocks
Receiver 1-1/16 wide
Receiver shortened from MK-III length but still longer than MK- II.
Trigger group upgraded
Butt stock redesigned pistol grip
Forearm hanger screwed to bottom of barrel with 3 screws
Forearm no longer free floating.
Forearm hanger has rail cut in bottom
Wood forearm sides attach to hanger with three screws per side.

BSA International MK V (Heavy barrel model) Intro 1976 - 1985
Barrel heavy only. 1.00 dia. w/slight taper
Barrel clamped in receiver with two cross bolts
Barrel scope blocks attached
Receiver same as MK IV
Trigger same as MK IV
Buttstock same as MK - IV
Forearm and hanger same as MK IV

BSA International MK-IV and MK-V were available at the same time.

2003 - BJM

To give you some idea what you are looking for to find that date code.

This is the bottom of the barrel under the fore stock of the Model 12 Takedown I got yesterday.

Lots of marks, but which is it?

See it now, right below the N

E for 1 July 1925 to 30 June 1926.

I have a Model 12, and checked mine for the year markings, it doen't have one. Could I assume that the rifle was made prior to 1921?

smithrjd,

Quickly scanning The Golden Century I couldn't find any dates specified. The only reference I did find was" MODEL 12 This was the ultimate pre World War l target rifle. Post WW l a non folding rigid aperture rearsight was mounted on the rear of the receiver."

Not much help I'm afraid.

It does have the BSA folding rear peep with the 6 hole disk. I believe that the Model 12 was produced into the late 30's.

The folder is the BSA #8. Made with and with out "wind-guage" and different heights. Find a good one and expect to pay $150 and more. Here's info:

Prefix Letters / Model Details / Date Of Production

..................

Be aware some of the codes quoted as prefixes are actually suffixes and vice versa.

E.g. a Supersport .22LR observed to be TnnnnSB

On my BSA Martini Int'l MK II, is the first letter of the serial number a "U" or a "V"? and it there a site to determine the year of manufacture?

It would be a 'U'. There were no V's.
There is a barrel code, look thru the stickies on top.

UE Martini International MK I + MK II Mixed 1953 - 1960

So mine is in this category with the numbers 77X

Any way of knowing if that number on a Mk II is early or later production or is there any significance to the number?
