Ruger Mark III CAD Finally Available

Dear RFC,

I think I finally figured out a way to distribute my Ruger Mark III CAD that won't be too difficult to work out.

I have made an eDrawing file of the model that is about 5 MB, small enough to email it.

If there is any RFC admin or someone with server space and bandwidth to spare who would be willing to host it, that is cool too.

This is a screenshot of the model in the eDrawing Browser:

Who would want such a thing? People who want to make diagrams of the internals, a teardown procedure, a custom set of target grips, a custom internal part, a custom frame, a custom trigger? The sky is the limit, and this will save you some work.

As some will remember, I have used my CAD models to create photorealistic renderings as well - this is an older one, I have gotten a bit more realistic since but haven't uploaded any to the server.

Please PM and provide an email address that can hold a 5MB attachment if you want the file. All I ask is that you don't redistribute it, and be sure to keep the RFC members informed of any interesting things you come up with.

I can make other file formats available but have to figure out a way to send or host 25MB files to make that convenient.

If this works well, I would like to try and get a site started to allow collaborative development of new parts and ideas - kind of a virtual incubator. Aftermarket people and machinists could also access the designs, and help turn the good ones into real parts. I am currently without machining facilities, and sure do miss them.

Thanks,

BulZi

Sent out the first few CAD file requests

I have sent out the first few requests for the file, but with a slight change of plans. The Gmail account I am using to distribute doesn't allow executable files to be mailed (for antivirus reasons) so I am just mailing the eDrawing file itself (about 5 MB) and you can download the eDrawing viewer from their site:

http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/pages/programs/download/

eDrawings are sort of like PDF files for 3D objects, and you can create section views, show, hide, and make parts transparent, move things around, etc. It isn't as powerful as a full-on CAD program but it is pretty powerful and very small.

The same CAD files in Solidworks are over 25 megs, and not very many people have access to Solidworks, while eDrawings is free.

Sweet! Can you draw things with the edrawings viewer? I would like to do some drawing on improved parts... that would be a LOT easier than filing them out of aluminum to test fit to see how/if they work.

Can't draw in eDrawings...

Unfortunately, the eDrawings viewer is just a viewer, but it might help you to visualize the form of parts more easily since you can selectively remove parts and make them semi-transparent.

If you want to design new parts, I would suggest Solidworks.

I will eventually make the raw version of my pistol model available in solidworks file format, as soon as I figure out a good way to host it.

Google Sketchup

There is a free program that does 3D developed by google, called sketchup, but I am not sure how powerful the free version really is. They also sell a 400 dollar version.

CAD software is MUCH cheaper if purchased as a student, and many universities have a site license that will let you use it free on campus.
