Thanks R4, I wasn't sure exactly what that meant. Frustrating when nothing seems to work, but perhaps you're right and it is a chamber problem. Have you checked the Anschutz forum for tips?

Yes I've been using JB bore paste nearly every time I've cleaned it. I'm giving it one more deep clean with the bore paste and I'll see what it does with SK ammo next range trip. I don't see the paste ever getting rid of the chamber/leade tool marks though

Ahh sorry everything is 50 yards. Didn't think about contacting Weatherby since it's Anschutz made and having bought it used then modifying it I'm SOL for anything warranty related.

Well, I got brushed off by the warranty center. Seems like hardly anybody wants to stand behind their products nowadays... It was a long shot considering the unknown used history and the Weatherby/Anschutz manufacturer mix, who's supposed to take responsibility? I've now gone out of pocket and re-barreled the rifle, bought a 1416 HB barrel from Djdillidon so it came with his inspection stamp of approval. Had it at the range today in cold/windy conditions but considering that I think it did quite well. At 50 yards I just sighted in a quickly tested two ammo types, Midas + and Polar Biathlon, before I headed over to shoot 100 yards. I got to leave the range feeling like it's gunna be A-OK now and I'm looking forward to more ammo testing in warmer weather to really dial it in. New barrel is slightly heavier profile at 0.73" muzzle but still fits the stock well just had to open the barrel channel a touch.

Had an unusually warm day up here in the Great White North on the weekend, 50F with calm winds. I got out and did a comprehensive ammo test of 8 varieties shooting five 5-shot groups of each type. I ran a couple dry patches when switching ammo manufacturer brands, short stroked the chamber with a nylon brush (no solvent) after 100 rounds, but otherwise just shot groups without any special treatment. Everything shot at least decent and a distinct preference is shown for Lapua. The first row of groups on the left I don't give much consideration to as they are "seasoning" the bore with the next ammo's lube. It seemed to have an effect going from R-50 to R-100 and Midas + to X-Act, but then settled down for the next four groups with that ammo. I'd say problem solved

Just want to say thank you for documenting this journey. Lots to think about and learn from. My XXII is better than yours was, but I would like it to be better. The barrel slugs tight just ahead of the chamber for about 1 1/2 ", then very loose, tight for about 1" at 2" from the muzzle, very loose. Perhaps a new barrel is in my future too. :-)
Glad you have succeeded.
B.

yes seems like you got a bad deal on your barrel.
my barrel on my rifle is really good.
even my test target looks about half the size of yours.
I don't use my rifle. its a closet queen and am thinkning of selling mine??
I do love the rifles they shoot good and are pretty to look at.

50 yards, safe to assume anything I post is 50 yards unless otherwise marked for 100. I do not have access to anything less than 50.

The poor girl needs more surgery now accuracy took a turn for the worse the last two trips out, now I have found the rear pillar busted out So... an unplanned pillar upgrade, maybe even entire action re-bedding.

New pillars in and re-did the bedding. Used Devcon this time, much better than JB weld, nice and thick stays where you put it doesn't run.

Thank you sir, I won't zoom in on the flaws I figure once I do another 100, I should have the technique perfected Wonder what ammo it will "like" now.... I have a feeling it will still be Lapua.

Well, I haven't had time to do another ammo test like the 1/2" all day target. I've been playing the 100-yard challenge over in the CZ forum so I've just shot that when I've been able to sneak out to the range for an hour here and there. Here's what I shot at 100 yards on Thursday, best attempt out of several cards.
