**** 25 YARD IRON SIGHT PRACTICE **** 2/13/17

SCORE: 425-5X
NAME: Baja Traveler
LOCATION: San Diego, CA
GUN: Stevens 414 Armory
SIGHTS: Lyman Receiver / Vanway front
AMMO: CCI SV
INDIV TGTS SCORES : 91-1X, 77-1X, 78-1X, 90-1X, 89-1X

Notes: Went a little shaky today - Hidden under the rifle on target 2 is a flinch good for an embarrassing zero. If any of my rifles is capable of a perfect score, this one is it. For a rifle that was made just after WWI for military training, it is tack accurate.

Some Irons efforts over the past few days
Feb 11th was my best-hold day, easily a '9', which means i just settled for some poor holds. If i'd been more picky on the the 11th i could have easily beaten my old best irons score of 468. Instead i managed to include 5-8s, 2-7s, & 1-6.
Assuming they all should have been at least a 9, the 8s cost me 5 points, the 7s 4 points, and the 6 3points, for a total of 12 points i could have had by just being a little tougher on my shot selection. So the 459 would have been a 471...
Aaarghhh !

50 Yard Irons Practice
Score 188-1X
Name David R
Location Niagara County Sportsmans Asoc
Gun, Anschutz MP R
Sights, Peep and Globe
Ammo SK standard +
Individual Scores 31-0X 36-1X 38-0X 41-0X 42-0X

23*F, flag was straight out when I pulled into the range.
Bundled up. Hat and gloves.
First shot premature. Hit top of paper. A couple more premature shots, so at target
#3 I took my right glove off. Hand was cold. By target #5, I just fired the last 5 rounds
without putting the gun down. Just happened to be my best scoring bull of the day.

Still nice to enter. I can try to up the score, weather in the 40 predicted this weekend.

Very commendable shooting under those conditions David.
I know how it can be in the winter there in W. NY, I grew up just a bit to the east of you. I can't imagine trying to shoot well in that weather.
And with irons to boot, nice work !

Shot another 470-12X today, I seem to be stuck on that exact score
I should have been better, a few concentration lapses resulted in six 8s & one 7 for the spoilers .

After the 25 yard set I felt pretty good so I backed up to 50 yards and went for it.
Better than I've done from there in some time, ended that with a 196-1X, which included my best ever bull of 46-1X. More shots in the black than I usually get at 50, but there were also two zeroes which held me down below 200.

Cheers,
Bob4BVM

476-11X I am going to keep this target in case I can't shoot a better one next week.

474-10X
Name: 72coupe/Roy Woodman/69
Location: Wichita Falls, Texas
Gun: Kimber 82G
Setup: Factory Iron Sights/no sling

Notes: Very good day for shooting, good light that was somewhat variable, light wind out of the south 5 to 10 mph. Busy range but no one was shooting my target but me. There was a guy there with an AR pistol with a 7.5 inch barrel. I could not keep from shooting 8s. I had 23 of them but nothing worse.

Thank you Bob.

Went out and shot a 50 yard Scope for the first time at a new range. Shooting from indoors out a widow. Wind was blowing so hard it knocked my target over a few times. Still fun and still a better score. Sun was out and there were other people shooting including a dad wiht his two lefdt handed young girls for their first time.

Where east of here? I grew up on Tug hill.

David

A couple of quick questions to those of you shooting 460-ish plus. How often do you recheck your natural point of aim? How often do you drop the rifle from your shoulder and relax? About what is your shooting pace; that is, taking away reloading time, about how long do you spend on ten shots? I'm curious about the habits of those who shoot significantly better than me.

I shoot probably faster than most, usually shoot a single shot rifle mentally review the previous shot as a new round is loaded. Was it on call?good trigger control, fallow through? All at a pace that takes 45 minutes for a 50 rnd match. I am lucky to have good weather and my own place to shoot; don't have to wait for the range officer to go to the target.
