i read on a post somewhere that a 5mm would go thru a 3/16 plate where a 22 mag would only make a dimple in it .. has anyone tried this..

From my experience it is NOT the size of the projectile as much as it is the SPEED . I have used 1/4" plate to act as a backstop BUT never saw a rimfire go thru that

this is 3/16 plate, the one with the jacket embedded is a 40gr .22mag. The deeper and larger crater is from a 5mm, whatever the first offering from centurion was.
I have a pic from the back though it's too dark to post, 5mm pushed it out about 3/16ths the .22mag barely made a bump.

You're correct. Check out this video using 36gr Mini Mags vs 22 pellet propelled by a 22 nail gun blank. Not that I recommend it. Some pellets reach up to 2800 fps.

Weight of projectile + projectile construction + speed = target results.

In my 5# brick modeling clay tests the 5MM slightly outperformed the 17WSM in penetration but the 17WSM's speed splattered the clay further. Both were devastating and I wouldn't hesitate to use either on a broadside shot at a coyote. Just between you and me I would take any kind of coyote shot with either.

Heck... I wouldn't hesitate to shoot deer with them too, if it's all I had.
