It's very easy to check what's in Hoppe's #9. It's MSDS is available online. It does not show it to be carcinogenic and it doesn't contain benzine. You wouldn't want to use it for eye drops, cough syrup, or skin lotion but it's really not dangerous to have limited contact with.

Oh, wait a minute. I've been using it since I was little kid and had to have two skin cancers removed last year.

The original formula had benzine in it.
#9 doesn't contain benzine anymore.

Hoppes No. 9 may have once contained benzene but none in it for a long time. Benzene is recognized as a human carcinogen. Not sure how long ago that was determined, but I and many other college students who worked in chem labs back in the 60s and 70s used it as a common solvent to clean glassware. We typically had it all over our hands. No big deal -- then.

This is what it contains according to the MSDS:

Kerosene
Ethyl Alcohol
Oleic Acid
Amyl Acetate
Ammonium Hydroxide

And, yes, I like the smell of Hoppes too.

And... What does that mean? I checked it, and kerosene is not "nice" stuff, but neither are other petroleum-based fuels and solvents. That's the nature of organic solvents; some are worse than others. All should be used with due care.

Nothing ment by it.

I'm not positive because I quit handling Kerosene years ago but If I'm not mistaken kerosene contains trace amounts of benzene?

Either way all solvents should be handled with care and limited skin exposure.

Your original post said Hoppes contains benzine, not that it used to contain it but doesn't now. I was just pointing out what's in it now, not at an earlier date. That's like saying Coke contains cocaine which I've read that it did when it was first made but not now.

Another use for Hoppe's #9

But the kerosene in hoppe's #9 does contain naphthalene which is a carcinogen.

But since they get their kerosene in bulk liquid containers for a product to be used as a cleaner and not as a fuel, they probably can spec the kerosene a bit different.

My apologies. I clicked the wrong post to quote.

The fact remains that it was posted that Hoppe's contains benzine. It might have once but it does not now and I was just pointing that out.

Try using mineral spirits instead of Hoppes.

Never been there, no desire to go but from what I read the state of California has determined that everything causes cancer. If that's the case why would anyone live there Maybe soon it will be the country of California.

You gotta be careful!!! In California, they have just announced that life is a fatal disease -- it causes death! None of us are gettin' outta here alive!
